I haven’t posted anything for a while, and whilst it’s always preferable to post completed work I did want to share this unrealised project in order to thank the amazing team of collaborators both here in Melbourne and in Japan who worked very hard for nearly 12 months to bring this so close to fruition.

After our successful collaboration for the NGV’s 2020 Triennial Kengo Kuma & Associates and I were commissioned to design a permanent outdoor pavilion in Melbourne. The pavilion consists of thousands of timber modules lined with mirror finish stainless steel and constructed from She-oak timber, a tree that was once abundant on the proposed site.

The form of the module was derived from a pattern I developed from a sheoak seed pod (see photos) The stacked and rotated modules formed a curving archway that would kaleidoscopically rearrange the view to outside as you walked through.
